“Six years ago, I was so tired of hearing the crap”, says musician/songwriter Paul Nagi. Indeed, it was his disillusionment with the music industry’s often-narrow perspective that gave Nagi the impetus to feverishly dedicate himself to his musical aspiration. He kept thinking he could do better; but thinking about it was not enough. Nagi knew he had to start living his dream.
So after about “fifteen incarnations” of his band (simply called Paul Nagi), Nagi (lead vocals/guitar) is now delighted with the make-up of his current musical crew, which includes Don Sprouls (guitar/background vocals), Evan Hillhouse (drums/vocal backups) and Dre Howie (bass).
Now Nagi wonders, “How do we get people to hear it (the band)?”
Come this Saturday, thousands of people will be able to do just that when Paul Nagi performs at Granada Hills Charter High School’s Community Festival celebrating the school’s 50th anniversary. Besides the live entertainment, the family-friendly event, which will be held on November 6 & 7, will feature food and craft vendors, numerous children’s activities, and fireworks. The event is expected to attract close to 10,000 attendees.
Nagi hopes that the band’s performance at the festival will give them exposure to new audiences and build up their fan base. He describes the band's sound as a cross between British new wave and Indie Rock, and credits bands, such as U2 and The Killers, amongst others, as influencing its evolution.
Yet Nagi's creativity merely seems to start with his songwriting. In his most recent video “Quite Gorgeous”, Nagi combines his distinctive personal style with an eye-appealing theatrical delivery, filled with raw and robust energy. Made on a budget of only $450, Nagi also clearly demonstrates his business savvy. Interestingly, he also makes use of the talent of Jerry Horava, an elderly gentleman who appears in the early and late frames of the video. Horava, who now suffers from Parkinson’s disease and recently became unemployed, has in the past faced more than his share of life’s challenges. Originally from Czechoslovakia, after World War II, Horava was subject to persecution under the Soviet regime. Nagi’s empathy for the older man is admirable, in that Nagi hopes his musical success will one day enable him to assuage Horava’s difficulties.
In the meantime, Nagi works three jobs to support his family, including his two young children. Still, he is optimistic that he has the smarts and commitment to become a marketable success in the music industry. Nominated for a 2010 LA Music Award, Nagi will attend the November 18th ceremony infused with confidence. After that, he’ll undoubtedly continue to pursue a future that is “Quite Gorgeous.”
